The story, in three dyed cloths
Act one
The Stone
Lord Akaneshi died in the ninth month without an heir. When the last maple leaf falls, the domain is dissolved. The letter that ends it is already sealed.
Tomoe is forty-one, and her hands are brown from the stone. She knows every blade in the armory by the sound it makes on wet grit. She also knows whose blood dried on the ones that came back last week. She leaves her bench, takes one sword, and goes after the men carrying the rest.
Act two
Seven Grains
Seven towns cut whetstones along the Usu road, coarse in the hills and fine by the sea. In each one Tomoe hones her sword, and the road dulls it again.
Hyo Daigo, fifty-five, captain of the guard, rides a day ahead. He believes a sword that never cuts was never honest, and he means to settle every old grudge of the domain before the letter is read. Ume, twelve, a dyer's daughter with indigo hands, follows Tomoe out of the second town and carries the stones.

Act three
The Last Leaf
One maple above the castle still holds a leaf. Daigo waits under it, his blade chipped from the road.
The duel is short. Afterward Tomoe draws her edge across the stone the wrong way until it is dull, sheathes it, and walks down the far side of the hill. The letter is read without her.
Daigo's blade after the road. Three chips, never honed.
The rule
The blade dulls with every cut.
Gozumi, the second town. Three of Daigo's men hold the stone bridge. Tomoe's first cut goes through a spear shaft. The second opens a sleeve. The third skids off a lacquered plate, and she hears the edge roll.
She kneels on the bridge with Ume's stone. She has as long as it takes the men to regroup.
Your sword loses edge on every cut. Between duels you hone it at the stone. Hold the right angle and the edge comes back; miss it and you hurt the edge instead. A sharper blade cuts deeper and breaks sooner.
Hone the Edge
Drag the blade along the stone and keep it inside the pale band. Inside the band the edge comes up. Above it you roll the edge. Below it you only polish the flat. Then make the cut and see what the edge gives you.
On a keyboard: set the angle with the slider, then press Stroke the stone.
14 to 18 degrees
Drag along the stone
The pale band is 14 to 18 degrees. The blade slips a little on every stroke.
Edge under the loupe: Dull.
The blade came off the bridge dull. Angle 22 degrees, above the band.
Three edges to learn by eye
Dull. Rounded and safe. It parts two folds of cloth and stops.True. One bright line. Four folds, and it holds for the next duel.Keen. Mirror bright. All six folds, and a crack opens near the tip.
Ume holds a stencil up to the light in the second town.
